An SSL or TLS certificate is a digital file that authenticates your website and enables encrypted connections. Without one, your site cannot use HTTPS.
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and its successor TLS (Transport Layer Security) are cryptographic protocols. An SSL certificate is a data file installed on your web server that binds your domain name to a cryptographic key pair. When a browser connects to your site, the certificate proves your server's identity and establishes an encrypted tunnel.
The term "SSL certificate" is still common, but virtually all certificates today use TLS. The name has stuck.
A certificate contains your domain name, the issuing Certificate Authority (CA), a public key, an expiration date, and a digital signature from the CA. When a visitor's browser connects, your server presents this certificate. The browser checks the CA's signature, verifies the domain matches, confirms the date is valid, and initiates an encrypted session.
This process happens in milliseconds and is invisible to the visitor. The only visible clue is the padlock icon in the address bar.
Domain Validation (DV) verifies you control the domain. This is the most common type and sufficient for most small business websites. Let's Encrypt issues DV certificates free of charge.
Organization Validation (OV) verifies your business identity in addition to domain control. The CA checks your company registration details.
Extended Validation (EV) involves a thorough vetting process. EV certificates used to show a green address bar, but modern browsers have moved away from this visual treatment.
Browsers display a full-page security warning when they encounter an expired certificate. Visitors cannot proceed without bypassing the warning manually. This destroys trust and drives users away. An expired certificate audit flag is a critical issue in any site report.
Let's Encrypt provides free DV certificates that are technically identical to paid options. They renew automatically and are trusted by all major browsers. Paid certificates offer higher validation levels (OV/EV), longer validity periods historically, and sometimes warranty protection. For a typical Irish small business, Let's Encrypt is the right choice.
Modern hosting panels automate certificate issuance and renewal. cPanel, Plesk, and most managed WordPress hosts include Let's Encrypt integration. If your hosting does not offer automated SSL, it is time to switch providers.
